Cook’s Notes
June greetings,
June leads us into many farm and garden adventures. It is time to start the real warm weather planting. I tend to jump the gun a bit, in my own garden, sometimes I get lucky, sometimes I loose on my efforts. I have been fortunate to be soaking in lots of fresh air and garden knowledge at Soule Homestead Education Center. The more time I spend with real farm professionals, the more I realize how little I know about my love of the land and growing it. I hope to make up for my lack of knowledge with my ability to dig and scrape and weed and plant and pick for hours in the sun. I have spent several hours some days working a field alone. I spend my time in solitude with the birds, bugs, the dirt and my own thoughts. It is quite refreshing and makes me feel very close to all that is creative. Soule Homestead Education Center is in Middleboro and they offer great programs for children through out the year.
This passed week my restaurant was honored to host a lovely rehearsal dinner. Young love is such a beautiful and renewing experience. It seems so appropriate to send couples off to a life together in the warmth and vibrancy of spring and summer.
My baby Paul Francis turned 9 years old this week. The most often repeated memory that guests have of my son is my carrying him in the sling as I cooked at “The Galley”. He was referred to as “the baby in the Bag”. Now he is 9, time flies and we are watching as my first grandchild Eli grows up in the family business.
My first Farmer’s Market of the season is this Friday in Osterville. Local markets will be opening soon all over south eastern MA. Please support your local food system and enjoy the markets.
Best,
Martha and family
